Fringe review: Not a Nefarious Plan: An Ordinary Play About Superheroes

OK, I’ll bite.

Not a Nefarious Plan is, as advertised, an ordinary play about superheroes.

“The spark for this show came from a long ago conversation about site-specific theatre: wouldn’t it be fun to do a superhero show that actually happened on a rooftop?” write creators Silpi and Shawn Das-Collins in the program notes.

“Neither of us had ever written a play before, but the idea of a live-action rooftop showdown had taken hold.”

You might be tempted to shudder in fear after reading that last sentence. As it turns out, these first-timers have penned an ordinary but likable play about friendship, environmental rights and the courage to be yourself — set on top of the Varscona Parkade.

As with almost all superhero sagas, Not a Nefarious Plan includes a misunderstood protagonist, an origin story, the threat of the Earth’s destruction, and a dastardly villain, played to perfection by Shawn Das-Collins.

As with many first-time productions, Not a Nefarious Plan is hampered by the evil Dr. Too Many Props. At least 10 minutes of the 75-minute play seem to be devoted to cast members moving around shelves and tables from scene to scene. They might want to develop a new superpower: miming.
